Flagstone

If you’re looking for flagstone in the Nashville area, you’re at the right place. The Rock Place has many different types of flagstone to suit your individual needs. If you want to read a bit about flagstone and understand its origin and also common projects it’s used in, continue on.

  • What Is Flagstone?

The origin of flagstone lies in the geology of the Earth, but ultimately it is used to beautify boring driveways, backyard patios, and steps, among other things.

Flagstone is mined for its flat nature, which makes it easy to cut and use for construction (in fact, it was used in building castles as early as the 13th century in northern Europe). It is a versatile and easy building material, as well as a beautiful addition to any landscape.

  • How Is It Used?

Flagstone has many different layouts and uses.

Flat-laying flagstone is good for patios, front porches, lining walkways and driveways, garden paths, and sidewalks. Thirteenth-century farmhouses and castles alike would even use it for the ceiling and roof of their homes. It is also good for flooring in a spare room or sunroom, where a more natural feel is desired. Some people add it as flooring to their showers and bathrooms.

Stacked flagstone is good for columns, retaining and decorative walls, fireplaces, fire pits, siding, and facades. Columns on the end of driveways, when made with flagstone, give a home a European look, making it seem exotic and pleasing to see when driving down the road. You can also use them to build walls. Such walls may not provide a whole lot of protection—unless it is very high—but it does create a visually pleasing barrier.

Sidewalks: Flagstones are ideal for use as sidewalks because of the naturally occurring smooth surface. In fact, many parks use the material for their sidewalks because of the utility it provides but also because of their beauty.

Retaining walls: Many people use stacked flagstone for retaining walls because their width provides a suitable amount of surface area. Surface area is good because it means stability. A retaining wall with a lot of stability will last a long time, and flagstone adds both durability and beauty to a retaining wall, whether it’s for your home or business.
