There are a lot of ways to improve your home’s curb appeal, but few are as easy as adding natural stone. Because there are so many types of stones, sizes, and ways to use stone, the options are virtually limitless. If you’re looking for a DIY project that will improve your home’s curb appeal and create a visually inviting home, here are some ideas to consider.
Among the easiest of projects is removing your old cracked sidewalk and creating a walkway out of flagstone. Flat-laying flagstone can be used for everything from creating a walkway to lining existing walkways and driveways. It’s flat and comes in many shapes and sizes. You can lay the flagstone in pea gravel or cement it in. Either way, you’ll have a beautiful and decorative walkway leading to your home.
Changing your stairs is a bit more involved, but there are many ways to do it with natural stone. If you are already needing to replace your stairs, there are several methods. One, you can use large quarried stone that’s cut specifically for your needs. You can use stacked stone to build up the stair’s base and then add a large finishing piece on top. Lastly, you can cover your existing stairs by using cement and mortar with stone – just make sure you don’t alter the rise-run ratio drastically or you’ll end up with many trip and fall accidents.
On Your Porch
Concrete porches crack and become stained over time. If you want a new look, consider adding stone on top of the concrete. You’ll have a completely new look that will impress all your visitors. It’s often much cheaper to cover the cracks than to remove and re-pour concrete.
We’ve blogged about how a rock garden can create a great visual element in your yard and that is one way to add stone and increase your entryway’s curb appeal but there are several others. If your home has columns that are all wood and you’re tired of the constant scraping, painting and other maintenance, consider enclosing them with stone. You can also add stacked stone with mortar on either side of your stairs for a handrail which is both decorative and functional.
